Geoscience presentations and papers

Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) regularly presents their applied geoscience research at events and conferences in Australia and around the world. Our team of geoscientists also publish research in peer-reviewed Australian and international scientific journals.

The following research has either been undertaken by the GSV or with collaborative research partners.

Faults everywhere.... but it's not all our fault! Interpretations and implications of an updated regional fault network for central and western Victoria

The Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) routinely undertakes and updates regional geological interpretations, incorporating new data, techniques, and geoscientific understanding. A comprehensive update of the regional geological fault network interpretation for central and western Victoria has been developed by the GSV. The fault data package includes a review, compilation, and update of regional Paleozoic bedrock and Mesozoic basin fault interpretations covering an area from the South Australian border to the Mount William Fault in central Victoria, including significant regions obscured by younger cover sequences (e.g., Murray Basin), and highlights important implications for mineral systems and associated mineral prospectivity.

Australian Institute of Geoscientists Vic GPIC April 2024 event: A spotlight on Cambrian-Devonian Victorian geology - the Delamerian and Lachlan orogens and the formation of a world class gold+ province

Victoria has produced almost 2% of all gold mined, globally, in the whole of human history. It is a globally significant gold producer, but most of that production was historic. As exposed deposits became depleted in the early 20th century it became difficult to discover new deposits with the technology of that time, leading to a long slumber for the Victorian gold industry. New science and new technology has underpinned a recent gold revival, and recognised potential now exists for more gold and a range of base and critical minerals. This talk summarises the goldfields geology, the historical geological challenges and the recent technical and theoretical advances that have, at long last, begun to lift the veil on Victoria’s hidden gold, leading to new deposit discoveries and the rediscovery of Victoria as a region with highly prospective geology.
