Code of practice for onshore petroleum wells

A code of practice for the construction, operation and decommissioning of petroleum wells in Victoria is now in operation.
The code has been made in accordance with section 250 of the Petroleum Act 1998 (the Act) and supports the implementation of the Petroleum Regulations 2021 (the regulations).

The code intends to inform industry about minimising and managing risks associated with onshore petroleum wells during all stages of the petroleum well lifecycle (construction, operation, suspension and decommissioning). It is to be read in conjunction with the Act and the regulations.

The code contains standards, rules and specifications to provide authority holders with practical guidance about designing and carrying out petroleum operations.

Consultation on a draft of the code was undertaken in conjunction with the draft regulations. Information about that process is available on the Engage Victoria website.
