Statewide Reserve Inventory Project interactive dashboard
For the past 10 years, demand for quarry-based construction materials in Victoria has been increasing. Across the same period, production rates at quarries have also increased to keep up with demand. Our economic modelling has identified a risk of a demand and supply imbalance.
The Statewide Reserve Inventory
Resources Victoria Approvals Coordination (RVAC) is conducting an exciting new project. The Statewide Reserve Inventory is the first of its kind within Australia. It is a comprehensive dataset of quarry reserves across the state. Reserve as defined by JORC (2012) is quarry material approved and feasible for extraction.
The Statewide Reserve Inventory will assist in gaining a better understanding of the supply potential of the quarry materials across Victoria, and support:
- investment decision making for industry
- proactive and targeted quarry approvals case-management efforts so RVAC can better support quarry operators seeking approvals in areas where they are most needed,
- whole-of-government planning for cost-competitive housing, infrastructure, and construction projects
- future planning for the state’s Strategic Extractive Resources Areas.
To help build this dataset and provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date information information, RVAC is progressively collecting data from work authority holders across the state. Reserves data from work authorities contributing to over 70 per cent of the state’s annual quarry-based construction material production has been collected, but there is more to do.
Interactive dashboard
This interactive dashboard is best viewed on a desktop screen, to see in full screen mode you can click on the arrows on the bottom right of the dashboard.
The default view of the dashboard shows the total statewide reserves in tonnes. Selecting each partnership area will display the reserve in tonnes in that partnership area. Selecting hard rock or sand will display the reserve in tonnes for that rock type.

Participate in the project
There is still time to participate in this important project by submitting the approved reserves for your quarry site to RVAC for inclusion in the inventory. Data collection is planned to be completed by early 2025.
For more information on RVAC or to submit your reserves data, reach out to Tylah Drochmann, Manager Quarry Approvals at Resources Victoria by emailing tylah.drochmann@resources.vic.gov.au.
