Industry reporting
Community expectations about environmental performance, disclosure and transparency in the resources industry are increasing. To meet this expectation, industry must produce the following reports.
Annual reports
Annual Reports are mandatory documents prepared by licenced industry and submitted to us on a yearly basis. The report provides information on expenditure, production, rehabilitation and details of extraction.
Licence holders compile information on operations including:
- expenditure related to work undertaken during the reporting period
- details of mining work during the reporting period
- land disturbance, rehabilitation and environmental management obligations
- environmental monitoring (if applicable).
Individual mine and quarry operators.
Once a year.
If made public (not mandatory), these reports are made available on the website owned by the operator. Combined information submitted to the regulator is published in the Statistical Report and national mining data tables produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Note: The Minister for Resources may ask any declared mining or quarry operator to make their report available to the public if it is deemed to be in the 'public interest' or if the licence ceases to be in force.
Declared Mine or Quarry reports
A declared mine or quarry is a mine or quarry that has geotechnical or hydrogeological factors that may pose a significant risk to public safety, the environment or public infrastructure. There are only three declared mines or quarries in Victoria, the Latrobe Valley coal mines.
The three declared mines are:
- MIN5003 - EnergyAustralia Yallourn Pty Ltd (Yallourn Mine)
- MIN5004 - Hazelwood Power Corporation Pty Ltd (Hazelwood Mine)
- MIN5189 - AGL LYP3 Pty Ltd (Loy Yang Mine)
Major geotechnical and hydrogeological hazards are identified in the reports. Analysis of the report enables licence holders and ERR to record and assess stability management practices for the declared mines or quarries.
The declared mine operators compile:
- details on how geotechnical and hydrogeological risks on site, including how these risks have been identified and are being managed
- clarification of stability controls, actions and review measures
- any stability modelling undertaken
- a monitoring plan, which includes consideration of historical monitoring data on geotechnical and hydrogeological behaviour over time.
Declared mine or quarry licence holders.
Twice a year.
