Cobalt

Cobalt is used in the preparation of batteries, pigments and colourings and, magnetic, wear-resistant, high-strength alloys.

In Victoria, cobalt is found mainly as the mineral asbolane [(Ni,Co)2-xMn4+(O,OH)4.nH2O] which is a secondary mineral found in joints and shears in the oxidised zone of dykes containing gold and base metal sulphides.

Asbolane has been recorded at numerous localities in Victoria, including Bullumwaal, Tanjil, Walhalla and the Glendhu reef in the Pyrenees Range.
