Gippsland Basin technical reports
As the various scientific studies of the Victorian Gas Program (VGP) are completed, technical reports will be progressively published, along with supporting data sets.
This page contains technical reports relevant to the Gippsland geological basin. Please note that because all VGP technical reports are divided between the Gippsland and Otway Basins, there will be gaps in the numbering of reports on this page.
Technical reports from the Geological Survey of Victoria are primarily designed for scientific, academic and professional audiences.
Progress reports that summarise the findings of the VGP’s scientific studies for the wider community are also released periodically.
Technical reports released to date
Technical Report 14: Regional baseline stygofauna survey
A regional baseline stygofauna survey across the Gippsland Basin was conducted as part of the Victorian Gas Program. The survey sampled 20 bores within the State Observation Bore Network, providing a baseline dataset to assist in identifying subsurface groundwater dependent ecosystems.
Technical Report 16 - Regional atmospheric baseline methane and carbon dioxide measurements
Two atmospheric surveys were conducted, covering 8000 km of roads, to establish a regional baseline concentration for methane and carbon dioxide and identify primary sources of atmospheric methane in the onshore Gippsland Basin.
Technical Report 20: Regional 3D geological framework model, Gippsland Basin
A new regional 3D geological framework model of the onshore and nearshore Gippsland Basin has been built as part of the Victorian Gas Program (VGP) using existing seismic and well data held by the Geological Survey of Victoria. This study represents a new and comprehensive compilation, analysis and interpretation of the available geological and geophysical data from the onshore and nearshore Gippsland Basin, incorporating data and knowledge from previous studies and interpretations.
Technical Report 22 - A regional baseline of quality and hydrocarbon occurrence in groundwater Onshore Gippsland Basin, Victoria
A regional assessment of groundwater chemistry, environmental isotopes, dissolved methane, and longer-chain hydrocarbon occurrence across the Gippsland Basin has been conducted as part of the Victorian Gas Program. This baseline study is the most complete deep groundwater chemistry dataset collected in the Gippsland Basin by the Victorian Government to date, building on existing data and providing a baseline measure of groundwater conditions.
Technical Report 24 - Groundwater sample collection and analytical methods for hydrochemical and dissolved gas analyses Onshore Gippsland Basin
A regional assessment of groundwater chemistry, environmental isotopes, dissolved gas, and hydrocarbon occurrence has been conducted across the Gippsland Basin as part of the Victorian Gas Program. This report presents detailed field sampling and laboratory analysis methods for all groundwater samples collected.
Technical Report 26 - Geochemical interpretations of groundwater processes and methane origin
A regional assessment of groundwater chemistry, environmental isotopes, dissolved gas and hydrocarbon occurrence has been conducted across the Gippsland Basin as part of the Victorian Gas Program. This report presents the chemical analysis of results and interpretations from groundwater samples collected. It is intended to supplement the Gippsland Basin regional baseline technical report and lend further context to results and interpretations presented within that report.
Technical Report 36 - Gippsland Groundwater Model (GGMv1.1) Groundwater impact assessment - Re-calibration of numerical model
A regional-scale groundwater impact assessment model of the Gippsland Basin has been re-calibrated, based on a previous groundwater model from the 2015 Victorian Water Science Studies. The model has been used to assess the potential impacts onshore conventional gas development may have on groundwater in the basin.
Technical Report 51 – Resource and Land Use Planning model
A strategic land assessment of the Gippsland geological basin has been undertaken as part of the Victorian Gas Program’s scientific research into the risks, benefits and impacts of onshore conventional gas. The assessment, resulting in a model integrating approximately 140 data sets, seeks to ensure that any potential future onshore conventional gas exploration and development can take the local context into account.
Technical Report 59 - Environmental assessment of decommissioned petroleum wells using regional baseline data, Onshore Gippsland Basin
This report presents an assessment of the variation in environmental receptors proximal to decommissioned petroleum wells with the new regional-scale environmental baseline data collected as part of the Victorian Gas Program.
Technical Report 61 - Site scale groundwater impact assessment, Onshore Gippsland Basin
The potential for environmental impacts in the onshore Gippsland Basin was assessed at a site scale using groundwater modelling as part of the Victorian Gas Program’s environmental studies. Through the modelling, the potential for mixing between aquifers and reservoirs was assessed.
