Melbourne digs deep to host international geology conference

Resources Victoria is backing a bid to hold the 38th International Geological Congress 2028 right here in Melbourne.
Led by the Australian Geoscience Council, the event would bring more than 6,000 delegates from around the world to Melbourne to hear about all things geoscience during a week of presentations and workshops.
Field trips to significant geological locations in regional Victoria will run before and after the conference.
The Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV), part of Resources Victoria, is a member of the team preparing Melbourne’s bid.
Co-president of the bid and Manager Minerals Geoscience at GSV Cameron Cairns described the proposal as having support across Australasia, including New Zealand, the Pacific Community, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste.
“We have structured our bid for this prestigious event around an offering from Australasia to the international geoscience community.
“Melbourne is the host location, but the bid has support from across Australia, the Pacific and Asia.”
Mr Cairns will head to the Republic of Korea next week with colleagues from the bid team to showcase and present Melbourne’s offerings to members of the International Union of Geological Sciences.
