Resources regulator to inspect Gippsland quarries

After a successful series of inspections across the state, Resources Victoria will be out in force again during August, this time inspecting quarries throughout East Gippsland and the Bass Coast.

After a successful series of inspections across the state, Resources Victoria will be out in force again during August, this time inspecting quarries throughout East Gippsland and the Bass Coast.

The inspections are part of a broad program aimed at better understanding how operators are managing risks and involves inspecting every mine and quarry across the state.

The next phase of site visits will focus on ensuring quarries are not exceeding the extraction limits detailed in their work plans and that site rehabilitation obligations are up to date. Information gathered will inform future audits and inspections.

Quarry operators are required to understand and implement the commitments in their work plan. Inspections conducted during the first half of 2025 identified some sites with inadequate fuel management, poor waste storage and a lack of boundary markers.

Operators should be aware of their boundaries and extraction limits, as well as their obligations to manage dust and noise. During the inspections operators will be reminded of their responsibilities and commitments.

Understanding and complying with limits on extraction and meeting rehabilitation commitments are crucial elements to properly operating a quarry. Operators will be required to address any areas that are being poorly managed or do not meet the site’s work plan standards.
