Landholder rights and land access
Landholders have rights when mineral exploration or mining is proposed on their land.
Before an explorer can access private land, they must get the landholder’s consent. We provide information on private land access agreements and the mineral licences and landholder FAQs.
Sharing information
We share up‑to‑date information about mining in Victoria. This includes details about past, current and possible future mineral sands projects. You can find this in the Mining Register.
Being consulted
By law, mining companies must consult with communities and landholders throughout the life of a project. This includes exploration, mining operations and rehabilitation.
Visit the Community engagement and the duty to consult for more information.
Objecting to a licence
Any person can object to the granting or renewal of a licence.
Mining Warden
Landholders and community members can also raise disputes with the Victorian Mining Warden, an independent officer appointed under law.
