Digging deep to renew quarries

Progressive site rehabilitation is an essential requirement for operating a quarry in Victoria and a key part of the sector’s broad social licence.

Progressive site rehabilitation is an essential requirement for operating a quarry in Victoria and a key part of the sector’s broad social licence.

Rehabilitation work including earthworks, replacing topsoil and planting can be done throughout the life of the quarry. Site inspections conducted by Resources Victoria in 2025 demonstrated that many operators need to do more to progressively rehabilitate their sites.

In sponsoring the Construction Material Processing Association’s (CMPA) Best Practice in Progressive Rehabilitation Award, Resources Victoria is encouraging best practice across quarry sector.

The award consists of categories for small and large quarries, with quarries expected to show a strong link between their progressive site rehabilitation and operational decisions. Continuous improvement in rehabilitation will also be highly regarded.

The winners of the CMPA’s inaugural Best Practice Progressive Rehabilitation Award will be announced at the organisation’s Annual Dinner Saturday 30 August.
