Celebrating National Science Week – Meet Gus and Shannon

This National Science Week, we’re putting the spotlight on Gus and Shannon, two of our talented scientists from Resources Victoria.

This National Science Week, we’re putting the spotlight on Gus and Shannon, two of our talented scientists from Resources Victoria.

Gus and Shannon work on our groundwater and soil sampling program which helps to support the Victorian Critical Minerals Roadmap.

How did you get into this type of work?

Gus: I am an environmental geochemist working with the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) on the Victorian Critical Minerals Roadmap. Gus and Shannon in the field

I joined GSV earlier in 2025, after completing a PhD in hydrogeology and geochemistry.

I also hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, and have a strong passion for groundwater research and sustainable resource management

Shannon: I have a bachelor’s degree in Geosciences and Geography & Environmental Sciences, with honours in Geosciences.

I joined GSV in 2016 to work on the Victorian Gas Program bringing my expertise in sedimentology and depositional environment interpretation to the team.

What does your role involve?

Gus: As an environmental geochemist, my role is to collect and analyse high-quality geochemistry data from across northwest Victoria.

Using this data, I interpret the processes that influence the movement of groundwater and minerals through the environment.

Shannon: Since the completion of the Victorian Gas Program, I have been afforded a number of opportunities to upskill in other geoscience and science related disciplines.

I have worked on the Former Mines and Quarries Framework Program for the past two and a half years during which I led field campaigns to validate the existence of, and add to, our database of mining features.

This work piqued my interest in working with and analysing geospatial datasets. Gus and Shannon in the field

I have supported the Victorian Critical Minerals Roadmap through the safe planning of the field campaign, as well as in-field groundwater sampling support.

What do you enjoy about your work?

Gus: I really enjoy being able to work in unique and remote areas of the state, collaborating with like-minded scientists and contributing to the sustainable management of resources in Victoria.

Shannon: I love the variety in my role, the opportunities to undertake field work and develop new skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.
